How to Read...
As you read any of the texts we will consider this year, the following are reading practices you should employ
as you are reading; read with pen in hand or in a digital document so
you can interact with the text! In essence, read ACTIVELY. If you can't write in the text, post-it note or
keep a journal. Reading is not an exercise of tracking a the words across a page
- you should invest in the content the author presents.
As you read:
- Make notes
about main people involved
Who are the main players?
What qualities do you
attribute to them? Why? What did they say or do?
- What is or
are the main conflict(s)
Between whom does this conflict occur? Consider
individuals, groups, institutions, etc.
- What is the
motivation behind the actions and decisions of the main players?
How do you
you are finished reading:
- Write for
ten minutes on what you have read.
- Ask questions of the author, the
major players, the time period.
- Make predictions.
- Challenge the reading.
